 *This hospital where I work is haunted. I can count three places where I have either seen or sensed something. Of those, there is one where I will not go until noon or later, because there is a dark entity there and I want the sun to have some power over the day before I have to step onto that floor. Fortunately, for now, it is under construction - though that is just upsetting the entity. That floor is his, and he does not like people intruding. Even the contractors working on the unit have seen / sensed him. He is a story in and of himself. I've written a little about him in my novella "Room 214". This story has a slightly different origin, but I believe he planted the seed when I went past his floor in the elevator one day. I'm not sure what to think about this one, but I knew I would write it. Ultimately because it's a good idea, but it's darker than what I normally write.  *It's not common for me to remember my dreams. I don't know if I just don't naturally slip into the deep sleep needed to be able to dream, or if they're fading out on me for a reason. This story here is based on a dream I had while reading about psychopaths for a novel I have in-progress. Since this dream, and one very disturbing nightmare, I've stopped reading research materials at bedtime." That in-progress novel is finished, published, and will be talked about soon. For this story, too much talking will spoil the whole thing, but it looks at what happens when an adopted phychopath is finally able he cannot have / do something he wants. It also looks at the rather chilling results.

 *Another story that came about from working in the hospital. there are dangers aplenty for security, from patients out of their minds to those that just want to hurt others to those that are legitimately insane and don't know what they are doing. I'll be honest, this is from a nightmare after a very, very bad shift. Fortunately the worst I've had is a broken toe from a faulty bed. Some of my coworkers haven't been as lucky." I really need to update that statement to broken toe and ruptured ligament from the broken bed. That was eight months in a walking case, not counting the procedure to repair the ligament and PT. I'm truly lucky it wasn't anything worse. This is the longest story in the collection and asks the questions of what would happen should someone corrupt manage to get into power at a hospital.  *This is an older story written for one of my Criminal Justice classes. I'm not sure which one, but given the topic matter, it's most likely "Prisons and Society". There is a slight in-joke here, the novel the young man is awaiting is part of a series I haven't had a chance to finish up. *I work in a hospital as a Security Officer. One of our many and varied duties is maintaining the morgue. That is to say, we sign the deceased in and release them to the correct funeral home when the family makes their wishes known. I think that almost anyone knows hospitals are haunted. There are certain areas that are more apt for paranormal activity than others. The morgue is one of them. I was walking back to the office one morning and started wondering what the ghostly point of view is. Since I can't ask them, I came up with this.* Given the topics of the previous two novellas and some of my other works, I think it's fairly obvious I believe in ghosts. For this novella each entry is one short story, and they aren't too in-depth because it's hard to talk a lot about short stories without giving away the whole story. Each entry will begin with my author notes about the story and then have my discussion for the blog. *I'm an anime fan. one of those that I was fond of, and am sorely out of touch with, is Naruto. I was watching and episode when Sauske went missing from his hospital room. The nurse ran right to the wardrobe and looked inside. While I know she was checking for his clothes, at the time it struck me that she thought he was hiding in the wardrobe. That bore a fan fiction piece that I was never happy with, so I pulled the bare bones of my idea, left the TV characters behind, and created this story. A few comments on pronunciations / short-hand we use at the hospital  for a couple of units and a habit for the floors that I've used in the book. SICU - Surgical Intensive Care Unit. We (Security) call it sick-u. PACU - Post-Op or Post Anesthesia Care Unit. We call it pack-u. On the floors it's a habit to drop the floor specific number, so 453 simply becomes 53 whenever we are on that floor. It's simply because staff assigned to that floor don't care what's happening (within reason, or course) on other floors. This book has next to no research involved in it and quite a lot of the ghosts and experiences for the characters are made up. The exceptions are the ghost on the third floor of the north tower and the ghosts and feelings in the education building. Those are from my experiences. (From my author note) Story time guys. I work in a hospital as a security officer. It's harder than people think it is, and one of our jobs is maintaining the morgue. Talk about a hard one and no one warns you about it during the interview process. Anyway, my lieutenant (at the time) took me up to our closed north wing on the second floor because I'd never been in there before. It looks like something from the 60s and there are locks on all the doors. Just out of curiosity, I opened the door to room 214 and looked inside and was hit by one of the most negative waves of energy I think I've ever felt in my life. While not much of the information actually made it into the story, I spent several months researching the Titanic, its construction, the voyage, and the disaster. A lot of it was the era in which is was built, but it really was quite remarkable how many references I found in the whole undertaking to the devil. I know how superstitious sailors and those that rely upon the ocean for a living can be, and a lot of that played into the rumors surrounding the Titanic. Ironically enough, I've recently run across one demonic rumor in my research into the London Underground that involves the Titanic I never saw while I was doing my original research for this novella. It has to do with a cursed mummy (though I have yet to read about one that isn't) that was supposedly bought by an American and shipped in the Titanic's hold. The mummy is the reason the ship sank. The mummy is also said to haunt / roam the disused British Museum station. The mummy and sarcophagus are both on display ...

Writing in the first person has limited advantages when it comes to telling a story. To be honest, I'm not even sure what Sam's last name is. This particular voice is limited, but it's a good way for the author to keep secrets. And there is a big secret in this novella but, as River Song would say, "spoilers". For me, at least, I prefer third person for writing almost any story I work on, with an exception we'll get to in good time. As I feel more like I was told this particular story, I had to tell it in the format it was given to me in. As I mentioned, it was planned to have two books in this one - the story from each of Sam and Jeffrey's POV - and Sam was happy enough to share his story with me, but Jeffrey never was. I suspect a large part of that has to do with some of the spoiler information, but I'm not positive. Sam, a man who loves ships and stories, falls victim to a single recurring nightmare that ends the same way every night; in his death at the wreck of the Titanic. When he is sent there by his boss, he fears his fate has come to claim him. Instead, he meets the ghost a a man who traveled and died on the great ship that April night in 1912. Is Jeffrey all he really seems to be, and why does Sam feel so drawn to him? My first published work, a novella rather than a novel, though if I had been able to finish the story from Jeffrey's POV it might well have been a novel. Why not do something a bit different tonight? The stand-alone novels. *grins* I have a number of these that are, at this point in time anyway, the only book with the characters in the 'verse created for that book. One of them, in fact, is a collection of short stories that I had hoped to publish in magazines back in the day when things like that could still happen. My late father loved one of those stories so much he wanted more stories with those characters. The most ironic part of that particular story is that the idea was originally used as a fan fiction piece. Trust me, there's no similarity between the fan fiction version and my published version. I think it played out much, much better in the published version because I was able to go even more insane with it. There's both good and bad writing stand-alone novels and novellas.
